Japanese Culture Club works to discuss, explore, learn about, and appreciate the culture, language, food, people, and traditions of the nation of Japan in a way that is inclusive and fun for all. The club promotes tolerance, understanding, and respect for all people in an educationally minded way. While the activities change every year and are driven by student interest, in the past the club has screened Japanese films, studied Japanese kanji calligraphy with a Japan-certified expert calligrapher, made video calls with high school students in Japan, watched karate demonstrations from a master martial artist, learned about and watched sumo matches, had Japanese cooking classes, made crafts for Japanese holidays, and, nearly every spring, taken a field trip to various important cultural places in Seattle, including Buddhist temples, Asian art museums, ramen restaurants, Japanese stores, and, of course, conveyor-belt sushi!
