Students working together to find solutions for global issues.

Model United Nations - A Brief Overview

Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the United Nations. The UN has different forums or committees and you will be assigned to one of them as a representative of a country. Once you know your country and forum, you will be told the issues your forum will be addressing during the conference (ex: how to stop the fighting in Syria). Typical forums are:

  • General Assembly (with different committees)

  • Security Council

  • Human Rights Commission

  • International Court of Justice

How to prepare for an MUN conference in the weeks before:

  1. Country Research – research the country you represent in order to understand its perspectives and goals

  2. Issue Research – research the issue that your forum will be debating

  3. Policy Statement – write a policy statement which outlines your country’s views on the issue

  4. Draft Resolution – create a resolution that attempts to solve the issue; you should write a solution that will get a lot of support from other countries without sacrificing your values or those of your country.

  5. Editing and Finalizing – work with your WHS classmates to edit and improve; seek to get a perspective from classmates that represent other countries.

  6. Review parliamentary procedure – this will be helpful when considering your debate strategy

MUN Expectations:

  • Stay true to your Values – be creative in cooperating and collaborating and be willing to compromise, but not on your core values

  • Solve the Problem – isn’t that the main goal of international diplomacy?

  • Collaborate and Cooperate – don’t view other delegates as competitors, but rather as partners; they may be reluctant partners, but win them over and be willing to be won over yourself

  • Stay true to your Country – after all, you’re their spokesperson…represent them well!

Through public speaking, critical thinking, and in-depth research, the Model UN experience allows students to cultivate skills and enrich their global affairs knowledge. UNA-USA is dedicated to empowering young Americans with tools and experiences that prepare them to be the next generation of global leaders.
